Jannat Al-Baqi – The Garden of Heaven

Date:

Jannat Al-Baqi is the earliest cemetery in Madinah located to the southeast of the Prophet’s Mosque. It is an important Islamic site in the Hejazi area and is also known as Baqi al-Gharqad. The tombs of the Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) family members and numerous associates are located in this cemetery. This cemetery is also known as the Garden of Heaven which is the largest cemetery in the city of Medina. It contains at least 10,000 tombs of the Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) companions. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is believed to have prayed within the graveyard and attended funerals. It is also reported that around 8 AH, he performed the burial prayer for Abyssian King Najashi. “From this graveyard (i.e. Baqi) emanates a light that will enlighten the sky and the Earth,” the Prophet reportedly declared.

History of Jannat Al-Baqi

When Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) arrived in Madinah in September 622 CE, the region of Al-Baqi was densely forested with Arabian boxthorns. According to historical accounts, several residences in Madinah were built near this site after the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) arrived in the city. The area was cleaned and turned into a public cemetery for Madinah’s Muslims. As’ad ibn Zurarah, one of the Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) companions, died when the Prophet’s Mosque was being built. The Prophet picked this site as a burial ground, and As’ad was the first to be buried there. Ruqayyah, the Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) daughter, was also buried here.

She was the first of many of the Prophet’s relatives buried here. Uthman bin Maz’oon, the Prophet’s first Muhajirun companion, was also buried here.

This graveyard also contains the graves of the Prophet’s daughter Fatima, his uncle Abbas ibn ‘Abd al-Muttalib, and great-grandson Al-Hasan ibn Ali ibn Abi Talib, son of Hussain, and the Prophet’s great-grandson Ali ibn Hasain Zayn al-Abidin. Because it is the final resting place of many devout souls, it is one of the most essential locations to visit in Madinah.

Why Jannat Al-Baqi was reconstructed?

Jannat Al-Baqi was razed in 1806 and rebuilt in the mid-nineteenth century before being destroyed again in 1925 or 1926. According to reports, the sites were demolished in both cases under the command of Wahhabi adherents (an Islamic revivalist movement within Sunni Islam). Prior to the initial destruction, the House of Saud (Wahhabism) started demolishing religious structures like mosques and tombs. In accordance with its beliefs, it demolished the cemetery.

When the House of Saud regained control of the region in 1924 or 1925, Abdulaziz bin Abdul Rahman Al Saud (founder of Saudi Arabia) authorized the site’s demolition under religious sanction by Qadi (judge of Sharia court). Even the plain-looking gravestones on the site were demolished.

What was the name of the first companion buried at Jannat Al-Baqi?

Uthman ibn Maz’oon (RA), who died immediately after the battle of Badr, was one of the first Muhajiroon comrades to be buried here. This graveyard is the last burial place of many of the prophet’s family and allies, including his loving wife Aisha (RA), who had originally planned to be buried next to her father and husband (RA) but gave up her location at Umar’s (RA) request. A lot of Shaba Ikram is also buried in the Jannat Al-Baqi. People who visit Madinah crave to go for ziarat of Jannat Al-Baqi as it is one of the most sacred places in Madinah.
