Today, the Swedish Public Health Agency announced that it is lowering the limit for those who will be offered a vaccine against covid-19, from 18 years to 16 years. This means that everyone who goes to high school will receive a vaccine in Sweden.
At the press conference today, Johan Carlsson, Director General of the Swedish Public Health Agency, says that vaccination of the group between 16-18-year-olds can begin as soon as the population over 18 is vaccinated.
– Vaccination can begin when vaccinations of adults have been completed. We believe that it can start at the earliest sometime in August, he says.
High school students should also be vaccinated against covid-19
The reason for the reduction is that it is now known that vaccines also protect young people at these ages against covid-19. Vaccination within the upper secondary school group will thus protect this age group from outbreaks, and can also contribute to a reduction in the spread of infection in society.
Will children from the age of 12 be vaccinated?
Today, it is also decided that children from the age of 12 can be vaccinated if there are special reasons. Pfizer’s vaccine is approved for children from 12 years.
You have to get more
It is safe and effective for children from that age, says Johan Carlson.
– But it is always the child’s best interests that decide, says Johan Carlson.
When can high school students get vaccinated?
At the earliest in August 2021, it will thus be possible to start vaccinating 16-18-year-olds. The goal is for it to start at the same time everywhere to achieve equal care.
