There are about 2,000 variations of this popular cookie, including banana chocolate chip and raspberry white chocolate chip, but the most popular is the Toll House cookie recipe on the back of the Nestle chocolate chip package.
In 1930, Ruth Wakefield and her husband Kenneth founded the Toll House Inn near Boston, Massachusetts. It was a tourist inn located in a building (dating back to about 1709) where travelers once paid their fares, changed horses, and enjoyed a home-cooked meal.
The Toll House Inn was famous for Ruth’s culinary skills, especially her desserts. She often sent travelers on trips with her delicious cookies, and one day in 1937, Ruth added a small piece of “yellow brand” semi-sweet chocolate bar to the butter cookie dough.
The result? An immediate success!
The story goes that Ruth received a lifetime supply of chocolate in exchange for a recipe that Nestlé printed on the back of a packet of semi-sweet chocolates. The cookie recipe became so popular that Nestlé began selling chocolate chips specifically designed for cookies.

Nearly 100 years after Ruth first put chocolate in cookies, Nestlé chocolate chips sold in North America are still made according to the original Wakefield Toll House recipe.
Like Ruth’s recipe, the basic chocolate cookie recipe contains flour, sugar, butter or margarine, baking powder or baking soda, eggs, vanilla, and chocolate chips. Cookie and Milk Bouquet
Tollhouse Chocolate Cookie Dough 1 serving
Popsicle sticks of various heights (rolled paper, not plastic).
Royal icing
Preheat oven to 375°F. Roll cookie dough into 2-inch diameter balls. Place 4 balls on an ungreased cookie sheet. Insert a lollipop stick into each ball. Lightly press down on the dough.
Bake for 13 to 15 minutes or until cookies is crisp around the edges. Cool for 1 minute on a baking sheet, then place on a wire rack and let cool completely.
After cooling (about 20 minutes), decorate cookies with dough and icing. Use the icing sparingly so as not to alter the healthy taste of the cookie. For the milk cookie theme, milk whiskers can be added from the white icing.
