Can’t Miss Attractions in Sydney Australia – Insiders Guide

Date:

Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a long-time resident these are some of the best places to visit in the great city of Sydney, Australia.

Sydney is the oldest, biggest and most beautiful of all Australian cities.  It’s hard to imagine this gorgeous state capital was once a convict colony.  It was in Sydney in 1788 that Captain Arthur Phillip established the first British colony.   Although it has grown into a sprawling metropolis it’s still possible to explore Sydney’s history in the narrow cobbled street and historic buildings of the Rocks.

You can learn about the indigenous Gadigal Aborigines, their traditional customs and how they acted as custodians of the land, at some of the city’s excellent museums.

Book a helicopter tour and fly over Sydney for stunning panoramic views of the coastline and harbour.  There is so much to see and do in this wonderful city, we’ll probably leave something out, but here is a list of some of the best places in Sydney.

Sydney Opera House

This is one of the great icons of the world.  It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the main attraction of the harbour.  This stunning building, with a design of billowing sails, sits on a sliver of land that juts into the Harbor.

You can stroll around the grounds or take an organized tour.  Inside the building, you’ll find theatres, studios, exhibition halls, a concert hall and a cinema.

The Bennelong restaurant is located inside.  If you can get in, you will be treated to a fine dining experience that will leave you speechless.

Sydney Harbour Bridge

Built in 1932, the bridge remains the largest steel arch bridge in the world. You can drive over it, ride a train across it, and cruise below it.  The best way to experience the bridge is to climb to the 135-meter summit.

There are a range of different tours that will take you on a 3.5-hour climb to the top of the outer arch.  You will be filled with tales of your adventure, and learn about the history of the bridge along the way.  You’ll get the best views of Sydney from all angles and come back with a memory that will last a lifetime.

The experienced guides will help you navigate the bridge with confidence.

The Rocks

Get a peek into history with a stroll around the Rocks.  The historic area was once home to the Gadigal Aboriginal people.  It later became the site of the country’s first European settlement.

The Rocks were named for the rocky coast on the west side of Sydney Cove, where convicts once pitched their tents.

Stop at the Rocks Discovery Museum to learn about the fascinating history of the area. Buy delicious street food and handmade fashions in the open-air market, and check out some of Sydney’s oldest pubs.  There are many upscale restaurants with harbour views to relax and enjoy the view.

Sydney is an easy city to visit, with easy-to-obtain tourist visas.

There are so many incredible places to visit in Australia.  If you’ve never been, you should put it on your bucket list and create a memory that you’ll never forget.
