10 Causes of Painful Urination

Date:

Painful urination, also known as dysuria, is a disease where you experience burning, discomfort, or pain while urinating. You can experience pain or burning where urine passes out of your body. In addition, you may feel these symptoms inside of the body. These symptoms can include pain in the prostate, bladder, or behind the pubic bone.

Usually, painful urination is a sign of an infection or other health problems. According to the best urologist in Karachi, dysuria is a common symptom of urinary tract infections (UTIs). The urinary tract consists of the urethra, bladder, and kidneys. The urethra is a tube that carries urine out of the body. However, there are several problems that affect the urethra leading to painful urination.

Common Causes of Painful Urination

Here are some reasons for painful urination:

HIV or AIDS

Several diseases such as HIV, gonorrhea, AIDS, herpes, and chlamydia, can affect the urethra, which may lead to pain while urinating. However, symptoms of these diseases vary according to their type. For instance, herpes causes lesions (blister-like).

Ovarian Cysts

Ovarian cysts like kidney stones can press the bladder and cause painful urination. These cysts may develop on both ovaries, which sit on either bladder site. However, ovarian cysts may cause some additional symptoms such as;

  • Breast tenderness
  • Unusual vaginal bleeding
  • Pelvic pain
  • Painful periods
  • Difficulty in recognizing whether the bladder is empty or not

Bladder Cancer

People can experience bladder cancer when abnormal cells develop in the bladder. If these abnormal cells are left untreated, then they can damage organs or tissues and spread to the other body’s parts.

There are several symptoms associated with bladder cancer, such as pelvic pain, frequent urination, painful urination, back pain, and bloody urine. It is essential for you to consult your doctor if you often experience these symptoms like painful urination.

Urinary Tract Infections

Urinary tract infections occur when additional bacteria build up somewhere in the urinary tract. This tract runs from your kidneys to your bladder to your urethra and carries urine outside of the body. Painful urination is the most common symptom associated with urinary tract infections.

However, people may experience other symptoms of urinary tract infections such as frequent urination, fever, cloudy or bloody urine, back pain, or foul-smelling pain.

Chemical sensitivity

A person’s direct exposure to chemicals can affect or irritate the sensitive tissues of the body and cause burning sensations while urinating. Several households, such as cologne, lotions, fragrances, and soaps, may contribute to this problem. In addition, this sensitivity can easily be avoided by cleaning the area and avoiding future contacts.

Prostate Infection

A prostate infection, also known as prostatitis, may have similar symptoms to that of urinary tract infections. Acute prostate infections are similar to UTIs because it is often caused by a type of bacteria that also cause sexually transmitted and urinary tract infections. An acute prostate infection will affect almost 50 percent of men.

Kidney Stones

Kidney stones are known as calcified deposits of material that form in your kidneys. A kidney stone forms when the urine allows minerals to crystalize and clump together.

Several symptoms associated with kidney stones are mild to moderate pain during urination, nausea, vomiting, foul-smelling or cloudy urine, and persistent urge to urinate. The stones place themselves near the ureters, where the amount of urine enters the bladder and blocks the flow of urine.

Usually, general pain or pain during urination caused by kidney stones may fluctuate in intensity or come in waves.

Interstitial  Cystitis

Interstitial cystitis, also known as bladder pain syndrome, is a disease that causes chronic irritation of the bladder that may last for six weeks or more without underlying any infections.

In addition, the most common symptom of interstitial cystitis is painful urination. However, other symptoms are frequent urination but producing little urine, scrotum pain, pressure in the bladder, pain during intercourse or in the vulva.

Some medications

Some medicines may cause undesired effects. Before using any medicines, consult your doctor about the possible side effects, how they can affect you, and how to prevent them.

These medicines can inflame or irritate the bladder or urinary tract. If you are experiencing pain while urinating because you started taking medicines some days ago, then you need to contact your doctor immediately.

Vaginal Irritation or Infection

Vaginal infection, also known as vaginosis or vaginitis, is an infection that can occur due to the overgrowth of yeast or bacteria. This infection or irritation of the vaginal may lead to painful urination.

Other symptoms may also occur alongside painful urination:

  • Vaginal bleeding
  • Foul-smelling discharge
  • Pain during intercourse

Conclusion

Painful or burning urination is the most common symptom associated with several causes, especially related to bacterial infections. Most of the causes of painful urination are treatable. Therefore, you need to visit a doctor if you experience pain during urination.
