Why Does My Child Need to See an Orthodontist?

Children can have misaligned teeth, or malocclusion, for a variety of reasons. It could be due to genetic factors, a result of trauma during childhood or even something as simple as thumb-sucking. Malocclusion can develop at any point in life—even in adulthood—and must be corrected before damage is done to your child’s oral health. However, it’s important to understand that orthodontic work is typically not covered by dental insurance; most dental plans do not include orthodontic care. That means it may be up to you to cover costs for braces or Invisalign®, but with so many financing options available it’s usually manageable if you plan ahead.

Types of Braces

There are two types of braces, including traditional metal braces and Invisalign® clear aligners. Metal braces have a wire that wraps around each tooth and attaches to a back bracket. This applies pressure to move teeth into place. For many patients, these can be worn for about one year until teeth are in position. This is what you think of when someone says braces. Invisalign is an alternative option for straightening teeth with clear, removable aligners that are replaced every two weeks by your Dentist and orthodontist. These aligners use pressure from your teeth to slowly move them into position, similar to how your own tooth moves as you bite down on food or chew gum.

Getting Braces Without Pain

No matter how much we love them, most people would probably admit to having mixed feelings about their teeth growing up. While braces are often a rite of passage for kids (and adults), those who wear them know how uncomfortable they can be. But there is a happy medium. With today’s modern dental technology, getting braces can be less painful and long-lasting than ever before! So what do orthodontists do exactly? How Long does it Take to get Braces?

It all depends on how severe your teeth are crooked, but brace treatment time is typically around 18 months. The orthodontist will determine what type of braces you should wear. There are four main types of braces: clear or ceramic brackets, metal brackets and wires (elastic bands can also be used in place of wires), semi-rigid materials such as Invisalign®, lingual braces (braces behind teeth rather than on top) and fully removable braces.

After your orthodontist determines which option is best for you, you’ll meet with an assistant to make your custom brackets/liners from a mold of your teeth. You’ll wear these for about two weeks while your orthodontist makes any adjustments necessary to ensure that they fit properly. Once everything fits just right, you’re ready to begin wearing your new braces! Your Dentist and orthodontist will check up on you at regular intervals throughout treatment to ensure that everything is going smoothly. You may even have regular visits with an orthodontist instead of a dentist during certain parts of treatment if there are complications or if certain procedures need to be performed by someone who specializes in dental work.
