There are several tours offered, but here are our top three things to do in Las Grutas de Tolantongo:

Take a Tour

There are two main tours offered: The Classic Tour and The Royal Tour. Both include transportation from Mexico City to Tolantongo and back, along with entrance fees. However, the Classic Tour only takes you through half of the caves while The Royal Tour takes you through all eight chambers of the system and includes lunch at the end of your tour.

Take Photos

The lighting inside each chamber varies from dark to bright so bring your camera! Your guide will help point out interesting formations so be sure to take lots of photos and ask for tips on how best to capture them on film!

Visit the caves of Tolantongo

The Grutas de Tolantongo are one of the most popular tourist attractions in Mexico, so it can get quite crowded. However, they boast some amazing stalactites and stalagmites, which makes them worth the visit. The best time to go is during the dry season (November-May) when the water level is low enough to walk through the caves without getting wet or putting on a wetsuit.

Tour Hacienda San José Parangaricutiro

This hacienda was built in 1740 by Don Jose Maria de la Garza y Navarro and his wife Dona Maria Josefa de la Garza y Navarro, who moved here from Guanajuato City after his death in 1764. It remained in their family until 1802 when it was sold to Don Juan Bautista Camacho y Ochoa de Espinosa who changed its name to Hacienda San José de Parangaricutiro. The main house is still standing today and has been restored as a museum that you can tour for free if you ask at reception first (ask for Miguel). The grounds are also lovely with plenty of trees and plants plus mini-waterfalls

Visit the National Park of Tolantongo

The best way to visit this place is through its National Park, which has an area of about 500 hectares and was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2003. It has different areas like the Cave Museum, where visitors can learn about their history; The Garden Botanical, with more than 300 species of plants; And El Salto del Agua, where there is a waterfall that flows into a lagoon with crystalline waters.
