Saare jahan se accha

The words alone make us feel patriotic. The very sight of these three words invokes pride in our hearts, and makes us want to sacrifice all we have for our country. But how much do we really know about its origin? And what makes these three simple words so special? Let’s learn more about it.

I want to give myself in service

The poem, then, begins with a call to action—an all-too-rare moment for us in our self-involved world. Asking how may I serve my country?

is a bold move, one that most would never consider. Yet it’s one that continues to ring true even as more and more people seem intent on building walls around their countries rather than bridges to connect them.

But this is my home…my country.

There’s nothing more patriotic than being critical of your home and country. The fact that Indians like to criticize themselves shows how passionate they are about their homeland. Even if you hate everything about your country, there’s no better way to show you care than by pointing out its flaws.

Just don’t get so carried away in criticism that you end up disliking everything; India has many interesting things to offer! After all, my favorite thing is exactly what makes me dislike it in other ways: I love visiting India but can’t wait to leave (though I always come back). One day, maybe I’ll settle down here permanently—not only because it’s my country but also because now and then, there are glimpses of what makes it so special.

If there was no such thing as patriotism,

I doubt that anyone would consider it. I think we all feel a sense of loyalty to something greater than ourselves: our family, our country, and even humanity in general. It’s good to belong somewhere and know that you are protected by those with similar values and beliefs. We can also connect with others through shared experiences, like losing a loved one or serving our country during war time. These connections don’t only help us to find out what we have in common but they also inspire us to overcome challenges together as a team.

This place will always be home

While India is a land made up of diverse cultures, religions, and languages, there’s something that we can all agree on: When you visit India, you want to return again. This sentiment is best expressed in Ustad Muhammad Rafi’s hit song Sare Jahan Se Achha. The lyrics of Sare Jahan Se Acha translate to This is better than all other places—endear every Indian heart to our country as it embodies patriotism at its finest.
