Monkey Types & New Facts

Date:

An entire barrel full of Monkeys. They’re stunning, mischievous, and sometimes fascinating monkeys! They can be found in a variety of different ways in accordance with their environment. They’re mostly arboreal. Others, such as macaques baboons, and some mangabeys, have more of a terrestrial nature. Every monkey can use its feet and hands to hold onto branches, however some arboreal monkeys are able to utilize their tails as well. Tails that can grab and hold are known as prehensile. These particular tails have ridges on the underside and extremely elastic, so that they can grasp the branches of a tree or pick up something as small as a peanut!

Monkeys are found in two principal regions of the world, so scientists have grouped them under either Old World monkeys or New World monkeys. Old World monkeys can be located across Africa along with Asia. Some examples are guenons, mangabeys, macaquesand baboons, and colobus monkeys. New World monkeys are found in Mexico, Central America, and South America. Some examples are spider monkeys, woolly monkeys and howler monkeys capuchin monkeys, and squirrel monkeys. Tamars and marmosets are also found inside New World habitats but are distinct enough to be part of their own grouping of scientists.

There are a few characteristics that differ between Old World and New World monkeys:

Nose: The majority of Old World monkeys have small nostrils that are curled and set close to each other. The majority of Modern World animals have nostrils that are round and set far apart.

Cheek pouches: Macaques , as well as certain other Old World monkeys have cheek pouches. They are where food can be stuffed in the middle of the night which allows it to be chewed later. New World monkeys don’t have cheek pouches.

Rump pads: Old World monkeys, such as drills, have sitting pad on the rumps but New World monkeys do not.

Tails Some New World monkeys, such as spider monkeys, have tails with prehensile muscles, but Old World monkeys do not. One Old World monkey, the Barbary macaque, doesn’t have a tail at all!

HABITAT AND DIET

The majority of monkeys live in tropical rainforests of Asia, Africa in Central as well as South America, or the Savannahs of Africa. Golden monkeys and Geladas are mountain dwellers. Japanese macaques reside in regions of Japan that are snowy. these are the monkeys you’ve seen on TV who find hot springs, and spend a lot of time in the winter sitting in the warm water–kind of like a macaque Jacuzzi! Baboons dwell in savannas open wooded areas, and rocky hillsides; although they are capable of climbing trees, they tend to spend most of their time in the ground.

Many monkeys are known for their tree-swinging jumps that make human acrobats look like apes! Many monkeys employ their “arm over arm” technique that you have probably seen doing on the “monkey bars” at the playground! Colobus monkeys, unlike other monkeys have hind legs that are larger than their forelimbs. This makes for incredible leaping ability with great speed.

The feet of monkeys are just as flexible as their hands, which also help them travel through small branches high in the rainforest canopy. Monkeys play a crucial role in their habitats by flower pollination and spreading seeds when they move. Some monkeys can swim; their webbed feet help them swim through the water and they could traverse a stream or river to avoid predators , or seek food.

Owls and night-time monkeys are solely nocturnal, using their massive eyes to see in the dark. They communicate with one another via scents and calls which includes a string of grunts that echo in the forest.

Prehensile tails can be useful to keep a monkey in place while the monkey hunts for food, such as flowers, fruits, nuts, leaves, seeds, insects, bird’s eggs, spiders, and smaller mammals. They are also useful for catching small mammals. World monkeys fill their large cheek pouches with fruits, leaves and insects as they go foraging during the day, stopping for a bite and to swallow food as they come across a safe place to rest. Baboons are also known to eat meat when they can take it in, which includes young antelopes, rabbits and birds like the guinea fowl.

Leaves are the main food of choice for certain species of monkeys. Colobus monkeys and lupurs have chambered stomachs, which carry bacteria that help ferment and break down leaves. Geladas prefer to graze on grass!
