The indictment claimed that Cason offered to promote a new mobile phone service to representatives of AT&T in exchange for $50,000. Cason pleaded guilty to the charge in February of 2016 and was sentenced to two years in prison. He died on July 7th, 2017 at the age of 69 after a long battle with pancreatic cancer.

Cason spent more than four decades in the coaching profession, most notably at Appalachian State where he served as head football coach from 1983-93 and interim head coach in 1994. Cason was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2003 and the Appalachian State Athletic Hall of Fame in 2006. He is also a member of the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame.

Cason died on November 30, 2016 at the age of 74 after a long battle with cancer.
